How the calculator chooses the letters

Many families start a baby’s name with the naam akshar (नाम अक्षर), the syllable of the birth nakshatra. It comes from where the Moon was at the moment of birth.

  1. Find the Moon’s position at the date and time of birth, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology (Lahiri ayanamsa).
  2. Find the nakshatra and pada. The sky has 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each split into 4 padas of 3°20′, so there are 108 padas in all.
  3. Read the syllable of that pada. Each pada has one syllable, such as चू (Chu) for the first pada of Ashwini. That is the naam akshar.
  4. Work out the birth numbers. The Mulank (Moolank) is the day of birth reduced to one digit. The Bhagyank is all the digits of the date added and reduced to one digit.
  5. Check each name. Each letter gets its Chaldean value, the total is reduced to one digit, and that number is compared with the Mulank and Bhagyank by the friendship of their ruling planets.

Reading the result

Result What it means
Starts with the birth syllable The name starts with the naam akshar of the birth pada. This is the traditional choice.
Same nakshatra, another pada The name starts with a syllable of the same nakshatra. Some families accept this.
Same rashi, another nakshatra The syllable belongs to the same rashi (Moon sign). Some families accept this too.
Supportive The name number sits well with both the Mulank and the Bhagyank.
Neutral The name number is neutral with at least one of them.
Needs review The name number clashes with the Mulank or the Bhagyank. A spelling change can sometimes fix this.

When the birth time is not known

The Moon moves into a new pada about every six hours, so the naam akshar can change during the day. Without a time, the calculator lists every syllable of that day with its hours. The time on the birth certificate or the hospital discharge papers is usually enough.

Rashi name and calling name

Some families give the child a rashi name that starts with the naam akshar, used in rituals and the Kundli, and a different name for daily use. If you do this, check the calling name with the numbers too, because that is the name your child will hear and write every day.

For every syllable of every nakshatra and rashi, see the naam akshar tables. To see the nakshatra in more detail, with its gana, yoni and nadi, use the nakshatra calculator. To check one name in depth, use the name numerology calculator.

When you want a shortlist of names that fit both the naam akshar and the numbers, with their meanings, Namieta prepares one as part of newborn baby naming.

Frequently asked questions

How is the first letter of a baby’s name found from the date of birth?

From the Moon. The calculator finds the nakshatra and pada the Moon was in at the time of birth (sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa). Each of the 108 padas has a syllable, called the naam akshar, and the name traditionally starts with it.

Why does the birth time matter?

The Moon moves into a new pada about every six hours, so the syllable can change during the day. Without a time, the calculator lists every syllable of that day with its hours. Use the time from the birth certificate or the hospital record.

What if we do not like any name with the birth syllable?

Many families also accept a syllable from another pada of the same nakshatra, or from the same rashi. The calculator shows both lists. Some families keep the syllable for the rashi name used in rituals and choose another name for daily use.

How is a name checked by numerology?

Each letter of the name gets its Chaldean value, the values are added and reduced to one digit, and that number is compared with the baby’s Mulank (Moolank) and Bhagyank by the friendship of their planets.

Should the surname be included?

Check both. The first name is what the child is called every day, and the full name with the surname is what goes on records. Add each as a separate line to compare them.

Is my information stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.
