How your rashi is calculated
Your rashi (राशि), also called your Moon sign or janma rashi, is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the stars, so the calculation has three steps:
- Find the Moon’s position at your date and time of birth.
- Subtract the ayanamsa, the gap between the Western (tropical) and the sidereal zodiac. This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard one in India, about 24° today.
- Read the sign. The 360° of the zodiac are split into 12 rashis of 30°: Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena.

When the birth time is not known
The Moon stays in one rashi for about two and a half days. On most dates your rashi is the same at any hour, and the calculator tells you so. When the Moon changes sign during your birth date, it lists both signs with the time of the change, so you can see which one applies.
Birth rashi, name rashi and zodiac sign

How is my rashi worked out from my date of birth?
Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology. The calculator finds the Moon’s position for your date and time, subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa and reads which of the 12 signs of 30° it falls in.
Do I need my birth time?
It helps. The Moon stays in one rashi for about two and a half days, so on most dates the rashi is the same all day. When it changes sign during your birth date, the calculator says so and lists both, with the times.
Why is my rashi different from my zodiac sign?
Your Western zodiac sign is where the Sun was, in the tropical zodiac. Your rashi is where the Moon was, in the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24° behind. So the two are usually different signs.
Is the rashi by date of birth the same as the rashi by name?
Not always. A name rashi comes from the first syllable of the name, which matches the birth rashi only when the name was chosen from the birth nakshatra. For Kundli, matching and muhurat, the birth rashi is used.
What is the traditional first syllable for a name?
Each of the 108 nakshatra padas has a syllable. A child is traditionally named starting with the syllable of the pada the Moon was in at birth. The calculator shows it with your result.
