What rashi by name means
In the Vedic naming tradition a child’s name begins with the syllable (akshar, अक्षर) of the nakshatra pada the Moon was in at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras has 4 padas, and each pada has its own syllable. Reading this backwards, the first sound of a name points to a nakshatra pada, and the pada sits in one of the 12 rashis. That rashi is called the name rashi (नाम राशि, naam rashi). Looking it up is what people mean by naam se rashi (नाम से राशि).
How the rashi is found from a name
- Take the first syllable. “Rahul” starts with Ra (रा). English spellings are normalised first: aa and a are the same, ee is i, oo is u, sh is s, w is v, and ai is read as e.
- Find the nakshatra pada. In the syllable table Ra is pada 3 of Chitra, the 14th nakshatra.
- Count the padas. Chitra pada 3 is pada 55 of 108, because 13 full nakshatras come before it (13 × 4 = 52) and then 3 more.
- Divide by 9. Each rashi holds 9 padas, so 55 ÷ 9 = 6.1, rounded up to 7. The 7th rashi is Tula (Libra).
Worked examples
Rahul (राहुल): Ra → Chitra pada 3 → pada 55 of 108 → 55 ÷ 9 rounded up = 7 → Tula rashi, ruled by Venus.
Tanvi: the English spelling Ta can be two Hindi sounds. As तन्वी (त) it is Swati pada 4, Tula rashi. As टन्वी (ट) it is Purva Phalguni pada 2, Simha rashi. The calculator shows Swati pada 4 first, because त is the usual sound, and lets you switch.

Shravana’s four padas are written Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho in some tables and Ju, Je, Jo, Kha in others; both sets fall in Makara, and the calculator accepts either. Names starting with Sh (श) are read with the S sounds of Kumbha, and names starting with B (ब) with the V sounds of Vrishabha, as most naming tables do.

Frequently asked questions
Is my name rashi the same as my birth rashi?
Not always. Your birth rashi (janma rashi or Moon sign) is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. Your name rashi matches it only if your name was chosen from your birth nakshatra at the naming ceremony. Many names are chosen for other reasons, so the two can be different.
Which rashi should I follow, name or birth?
For a Kundli, marriage matching, dasha and muhurat, astrologers use the birth rashi. Many people read daily and monthly rashifal by their name rashi when they do not know their birth details. If you know your date, time and place of birth, the birth rashi is the one to use.
My name starts with T or D. Why do I get two answers?
In Hindi there are two T sounds (त and ट) and two D sounds (द and ड), and they belong to different nakshatras. English spelling cannot tell them apart, so the calculator shows both and lets you pick. Typing your name in Devanagari gives one exact answer.
How is a name that starts with Shr, Pr or Kr read?
By its first letter and the vowel that follows, so Priya is read as Pi and Shreya as Se. Some astrologers read such names by the second letter (Ri, Re), so the calculator offers that reading as a second choice.
