How your nakshatra is calculated
Your birth nakshatra (जन्म नक्षत्र), or birth star, is the part of the sky the Moon was in when you were born. The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, from Ashwini to Revati, and each nakshatra into 4 padas of 3°20′, giving 108 padas in all.
- Find the Moon’s position at your date and time of birth.
- Subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa to move from the Western to the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology.
- Divide by 13°20′ to find the nakshatra, and by 3°20′ within it to find the pada. Every 9 padas make one rashi.

When the birth time is not known
The Moon moves about 13° a day, so it spends roughly a day in each nakshatra and six hours in each pada. Without a time, the calculator uses 12:00 and lists every nakshatra and pada the Moon passed through on your birth date, with the times, so you can narrow it down.

How is my nakshatra found from my date of birth?
The sky is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′. The calculator finds where the Moon was at your birth in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa) and reads which nakshatra and which of its four padas of 3°20′ it falls in.
What if I do not know my birth time?
The Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra and about six hours in each pada, so the time matters. Without it, the calculator uses 12:00 and lists every nakshatra and pada the Moon passed through that day, with the times.
What are gana, yoni and nadi?
They are qualities of each nakshatra used in Kundli matching. Gana is temperament (Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa), yoni is an animal symbol and nadi is one of three groups (Adi, Madhya, Antya). The same nadi for both partners is Nadi dosha.
How is the nakshatra used for naming a baby?
Each pada has a syllable, and a child is traditionally named starting with the syllable of the pada the Moon was in at birth. The calculator shows it, and the syllables of all four padas.
Is this the same as the nakshatra by name?
No. The name nakshatra comes from the first syllable of the name. The birth nakshatra comes from the Moon at birth and is the one used for Kundli, dasha and matching.
