Match two Kundlis by date of birth

How Kundli matching by date of birth works

Kundli matching (कुंडली मिलान) compares two people through the Moon at their births. The traditional method is Ashtakoot Guna Milan: eight kootas that together give a score out of 36.

  1. Find the Moon at each birth. The calculator works out where the Moon was at the date and time of birth, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology (Lahiri ayanamsa).
  2. Read the nakshatra, pada and rashi. The 360° of the zodiac are split into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each with 4 padas of 3°20′, and into 12 rashis of 30°.
  3. Score the eight kootas. Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8), for a total of 36.
  4. Check the doshas. Nadi dosha (both in the same Nadi) and Bhakoot dosha (Moon signs 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart) are flagged, with the common cancellation conditions listed for information.

Worked example

Boy born 02/05/1991, 14:20 IST: Jyeshtha pada 4, Vrishchika rashi (Moon at 236.84° sidereal). Girl born 30/08/1993, 08:05 IST: Shravana pada 4, Makara rashi (Moon at 290.61° sidereal).

When the birth time is not known

The Moon moves about 13° a day, a whole nakshatra in about a day and one pada in about six hours. If you leave a time empty, the calculator:

  • uses 12:00 for the main score;
  • lists every nakshatra and pada the Moon passed through that day, with the times;
  • shows the lowest and highest score the day allows, and says if Nadi or Bhakoot dosha depends on the time.

Birth outside India

Choose the place of birth from the list so the time is converted correctly. For births in countries that use summer time, pick the offset that was in force on the birth date.

Matching by date of birth or by name?

Matching by name assumes the Moon was in the nakshatra of each name’s first syllable, which is only true when the name was chosen from the birth nakshatra. Matching by date of birth uses the real Moon position, so it is the traditional method. Neither checks Manglik dosha, which needs the full chart with the place of birth.

What the score means

The bands used here are 18 to 24 (average, traditionally acceptable), 25 to 32 (good) and 33 or more (excellent). Below 18 is traditionally not recommended without a detailed chart check. A score is a starting point: Namieta reads both full Kundlis, checks Manglik dosha and weighs the cancellations before advising on a match.

Frequently asked questions

How does Kundli matching by date of birth work?

The calculator finds where the Moon was at each birth, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. That gives each person’s nakshatra, pada and rashi, which are scored on the 8 kootas of Ashtakoot Guna Milan, out of 36.

What if we do not know the birth time?

Leave the time empty. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so the calculator shows the score at noon and the lowest and highest score the day allows. If Nadi or Bhakoot dosha depends on the time, it says so.

How many gunas should match?

This calculator uses the common bands: 18 to 24 is average and traditionally acceptable, 25 to 32 is good, and 33 or more is excellent. The score is one part of matching: doshas, their cancellations and the full charts are read together.

Is this the same as Kundli matching by name?

No. Matching by name assumes the Moon was in the nakshatra of each name’s first syllable. Matching by date of birth uses the real Moon position, so it is the traditional method and the more reliable one.

Does it check Manglik dosha?

No. Manglik dosha needs Mars and the ascendant, which depend on the place and exact time of birth. Namieta checks it in a full Kundli match.

Is my information stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.
