Do we have to use the naam akshar?

It is a family choice. Some families follow it strictly, some accept any syllable of the same nakshatra or rashi, and some keep the naam akshar for a rashi name used in rituals and choose a different calling name.

Where does numerology come in?

Numerology checks the name itself. The letters of the name are added by the Chaldean method and the total is compared with the baby’s Mulank (Moolank) and Bhagyank. A name can start with the right syllable and still have a number that does not suit the birth date.

Why do some tables give different letters?

Regional traditions differ for a few padas. Shravana, for example, is given as Khi Khu Khe Kho in some tables and Ju Je Jo Kha in others. Where a pada has two common syllables, both are shown.
