What nakshatra by name means
The 27 nakshatras (नक्षत्र) divide the Moon’s path into 27 parts. In the Vedic naming tradition (naamkaran) a child’s name starts with the syllable of the nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at birth. So the first sound of a name points back to a nakshatra and pada. That is the name nakshatra (नाम नक्षत्र), which people look up as naam se nakshatra (नाम से नक्षत्र).
How the nakshatra is calculated
- First syllable. The calculator reads the first sound of the first name. English spellings are normalised: aa and a are the same, ee is i, oo is u, sh is s, w is v, ai is read as e. A name that opens with a cluster (Pr, Shr, Kr) is read by its first letter and the vowel after it.
- Syllable table. The traditional table gives each of the 27 nakshatras four syllables, one for each pada. The first match gives the nakshatra and pada.
- Rashi. The 108 padas run through the 12 rashis in order, 9 to a rashi, so the pada also gives the rashi.
Worked examples
Kavya: Ka (का) is pada 3 of Mrigashira, the 5th nakshatra. That is pada 19 of 108 (4 × 4 + 3), and 19 ÷ 9 rounded up is 3, so the rashi is Mithuna (Gemini). Mrigashira is ruled by Mars, its gana is Deva, its yoni is the serpent and its nadi is Madhya.
Deepak: the English Dee is read as Di. As दीपक (द) it is Purva Bhadrapada, pada 4, in Meena rashi. As डीपक (ड) it would be Ashlesha pada 1 in Karka rashi. Because द is the usual sound, the calculator shows Purva Bhadrapada first and lets you switch.

Frequently asked questions
Is my name nakshatra my birth nakshatra?
Only if your name was chosen from your birth nakshatra at the naming ceremony. Your birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) is where the Moon was when you were born, and it needs your date, time and place of birth. The name nakshatra is the nakshatra your name's first syllable belongs to.
What is a pada?
Each nakshatra covers 13°20′ of the zodiac and is split into 4 quarters called padas, of 3°20′ each. In the naming tradition every pada has its own starting syllable, so a name points to one pada, not just a nakshatra.
Why does the calculator show two or three nakshatras for my name?
English letters cannot show every Hindi sound. Ta can be त (Swati, Vishakha) or ट (Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni), Da can be द or ड, and Na can be न, ण or ञ. The calculator lists every reading with the most common first, and you can pick the right one. Typing the name in Devanagari gives one exact answer.
What are gana, yoni and nadi?
They are traditional qualities of each nakshatra used in marriage matching. Gana is the nature (Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa), yoni is an animal symbol for instinctive temperament, and nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya) is used for the 8-point Nadi koota.
Can I use my name nakshatra for kundli matching?
Yes, as a first look. That is what Kundli milan by name does. For a decision, match the two birth charts, which also checks Manglik dosha.
Is my information stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and the name you enter is not sent to a server or saved.
