What kundli milan by name is
Kundli milan, also called Guna Milan or Ashtakoot Milan (अष्टकूट मिलान), compares two people’s Moon nakshatras and Moon signs on eight points called kootas. Together they add up to 36 gunas. Normally the nakshatras come from the two birth charts. When the birth details are not at hand, families often match by name instead: in the Vedic naming tradition each nakshatra pada has its own starting syllable, so the first sound of a name points back to a nakshatra and a rashi.
This page does exactly that. It reads the first syllable of each name, finds the nakshatra pada and rashi in the traditional syllable table, and then scores the eight kootas the same way a birth-chart match would.
How the Guna Milan score is calculated
- First syllable. The calculator takes the first sound of each first name. “Rohan” starts with Ro (रो), “Sneha” with Se (से), because a cluster such as Sn is read by its first letter and the vowel that follows. English spellings are normalised: aa and a are the same, ee is i, oo is u, sh is s, w is v.
- Nakshatra pada. The syllable table gives 4 syllables to each of the 27 nakshatras, one per pada (quarter). Ro is pada 3 of Swati; Se is pada 1 of Purva Bhadrapada.
- Rashi. The 108 padas run through the 12 rashis in order, 9 padas each, so the pada also gives the Moon sign.
- Eight kootas. Each koota is scored from fixed tables and the points are added up.
| Koota | Points | What it compares |
|---|---|---|
| Varna (वर्ण) | 1 | Temperament, from the varna of each Moon sign |
| Vashya (वश्य) | 2 | Mutual attraction, from the vashya group of each sign |
| Tara (तारा) | 3 | Health and fortune, from the count between the nakshatras |
| Yoni (योनि) | 4 | Instinctive compatibility, from the nakshatra animals |
| Graha Maitri (ग्रह मैत्री) | 5 | Friendship between the two sign lords |
| Gana (गण) | 6 | Nature: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot (भकूट) | 7 | Family welfare, from the distance between the signs |
| Nadi (नाड़ी) | 8 | Health and children, from the nakshatra Nadi |
Worked example: Rohan and Sneha
Rohan starts with Ro (रो), which is Swati pada 3 in Tula rashi. Sneha starts with Se (से), which is Purva Bhadrapada pada 1 in Kumbha rashi. The calculator gives:
| Koota | Rohan | Sneha | Points | Out of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | Shudra | Shudra | 1 | 1 |
| Vashya | Manava (human) | Manava (human) | 2 | 2 |
| Tara | Sampat (2) | Param Mitra (9) | 3 | 3 |
| Yoni | Buffalo (Mahish) | Lion (Simha) | 1 | 4 |
| Graha Maitri | Venus | Saturn | 5 | 5 |
| Gana | Deva | Manushya | 6 | 6 |
| Bhakoot | Tula | Kumbha | 0 | 7 |
| Nadi | Antya (Kapha) | Adi (Vata) | 8 | 8 |
The total is 26 out of 36, which is in the good band.
- Tara: counting from Sneha’s nakshatra to Rohan’s gives 18, and 18 ÷ 9 leaves 0, which counts as 9 (Param Mitra). Counting the other way gives 11, which leaves 2 (Sampat). Neither is 3, 5 or 7, so both directions score 1½, a total of 3.
- Bhakoot: Tula is the 5th sign from Kumbha and Kumbha is the 9th from Tula. A 5/9 pair is Nav-pancham Bhakoot dosha, so Bhakoot scores 0.
- Cancellation note: Tula is ruled by Venus and Kumbha by Saturn, and Venus and Saturn are mutual friends. Many astrologers accept this as a cancellation of the Bhakoot dosha. The calculator shows this as information and keeps the score at 26.
What the score means
| Score | Traditional reading |
|---|---|
| Below 18 | Not recommended traditionally |
| 18 to 24 | Average |
| 25 to 32 | Good |
| 33 to 36 | Excellent |
A half point stays in the lower band, so 24½ is average. The total is only part of the picture. Two couples with the same score can have very different kootas, and a single dosha can matter more than a few points.
Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha
Nadi dosha (नाड़ी दोष) is flagged when both nakshatras have the same Nadi. Common cancellation conditions are: the same rashi with different nakshatras, the same nakshatra with different rashis, or the same nakshatra in different padas.
Bhakoot dosha (भकूट दोष) is flagged when the two Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other. The most widely accepted cancellation is when both signs share a lord (for example Mesha and Vrishchika, both ruled by Mars); many astrologers also accept lords who are mutual friends.
Traditions differ on these rules, so the calculator lists them for information and never changes the score because of them.
Why name matching is approximate
Guna Milan was designed for the Moon’s actual nakshatra at birth. A name only stands in for it, and only when the name was chosen from that nakshatra. Many names today are chosen for their meaning or sound, and English spellings hide differences such as त and ट. A Kundli match uses the date, time and place of birth to find each person’s real Moon nakshatra, checks Manglik dosha, and reads the doshas and their cancellations against both full charts. If the name score is low, or a dosha shows up, that is the time to match the charts before worrying.
Kundli milan by name in Hindi terms
नाम से कुंडली मिलान (naam se kundli milan) and नाम से गुण मिलान (naam se gun milan) are the same calculation described here: the first akshar of each name gives the nakshatra (नक्षत्र) and rashi (राशि), and the eight kootas give the gunas (गुण) out of 36.
Frequently asked questions
Is kundli milan by name accurate?
It is approximate. A name stands for one nakshatra pada, so the score is exact only if each name was chosen from the person's birth nakshatra. When the names were chosen for other reasons, the Moon nakshatra at birth can be quite different, and so can the score. Use it as a first look, and match the two birth charts before any decision.
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Traditionally 18 or more out of 36 is the minimum. 18 to 24 is average, 25 to 32 is good and 33 to 36 is excellent. Most astrologers also look at Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, Manglik dosha and the rest of the chart, not only the total.
Which name should I use, the birth name or the name I am called by?
Use the name chosen at the naming ceremony (naamkaran) from the birth nakshatra, if there was one. If not, use the name the person is known by. Use first names only; surnames are not part of the calculation.
What is Nadi dosha and can it be cancelled?
Nadi dosha means both people have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), which gives 0 of the 8 Nadi points. Many astrologers treat it as cancelled when both share a rashi but have different nakshatras, or share a nakshatra but have different rashis. The calculator lists these conditions for information and does not change the score.
Does this calculator check Manglik dosha?
No. Manglik (Mangal) dosha depends on where Mars sits in each birth chart, which needs the date, time and place of birth. A name cannot show it.
Can I type the names in Hindi?
Yes. Devanagari names such as राहुल or प्रिया are read exactly. English spellings can stand for more than one sound (Ta can be त or ट), so the calculator shows every possible reading and lets you pick.
Is my information stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and the names you enter are not sent to a server or saved.
